Three pieces of information on a cosmetic pack look like versions of the same idea and are not. Two are about time and one is about identity. Confusing them is why people throw away perfectly good products, keep bad ones, and find that a complaint goes nowhere.
Three different jobs

Note that the first two are alternatives rather than complements. A product with a long unopened shelf life uses the open jar symbol. A product with a short one uses a date. The absence of a date is therefore not an omission, and the absence of an open jar symbol on a product carrying a date is not either.
What the period after opening actually is
It is an assessment, not a measurement of your individual jar. It reflects testing and reasoning about how the product behaves once air, skin and time have reached it, and it forms part of the safety file. It starts when you open the product, which means an unopened product bought two years ago and opened today has its full period ahead of it.
What it does not account for is how you use it. A jar used with fingers is a more demanding case than a pump. A product left in a warm bathroom is a more demanding case than one in a cool cupboard. A product decanted into another container is outside the assessment entirely. The period assumes reasonable handling, not any handling.

It is derived from the manufacturer's assessment, supported by stability and preservation data held in the product information file.
It does not mean the product becomes unsafe on the day the period ends. It does not mean it remains fit for use if stored badly, contaminated by dirty fingers or decanted. It does not run from the date of purchase, and it does not run at all until the product is opened. It is not a measurement of your particular unit and it does not override the evidence of your own eyes and nose.
A more useful version would be a date you write on the pack yourself when you open it, which is the only way to know when the period started. Everything else about the number is already as specific as an assessment of a population of units can be.
The batch code, and why to photograph it
The batch code is the least interesting looking marking on the pack and the most operationally useful. It identifies which production run your unit came from, which is the key to the batch record described in what good manufacturing practice means.
If you report a problem without it, the responsible person can log a complaint but cannot investigate a specific run, cannot check whether other reports relate to the same batch, and cannot connect your experience to retained samples or to production records. With it, all of that becomes possible.
It is frequently stamped rather than printed, in a different position from everything else, on the crimp of a tube or the base of a bottle, and it is easy to lose when the outer carton is thrown away. Photographing it when you open a product takes five seconds and is the single most useful consumer habit in this entire subject.
When you open a new product, write the month on the base in permanent marker, and photograph the batch code and the responsible person's address together. Keep the outer carton until the product is finished, or at least until you have the photograph.
That habit turns a vague complaint into a traceable report, and it removes the guesswork about when the period after opening started.
How long products actually last
The pack gives you an assessment. Reality is decided by storage, format and handling, and the signals of a product that has gone are usually obvious once you know to look.
- Separation that does not resolve on gentle mixing, or that recurs immediately.
- Colour change, particularly darkening or yellowing, which frequently indicates oxidation.
- Odour change, including a rancid or sour note, or the disappearance of the original fragrance.
- Texture change, thinning, thickening or graininess that was not there before.
- Anything visible growing. Discard immediately and report it.
Any of these means stop using the product, regardless of what the date says. A product within its period that has visibly changed is a defect and is worth reporting to the responsible person with the batch code.
Dates, waste and the incentives around them
Durability information is a safety instrument and it is also a replacement mechanism. A conservative period after opening protects the manufacturer and, incidentally, shortens the repurchase cycle. A generous one does the opposite and increases the risk of complaints about a product that has degraded.
There is no evidence of any general practice of setting periods artificially short, and this publication makes no such claim. The point is only that the incentive is not symmetrical, and that a shopper who understands the underlying signals is not dependent on the number alone.
- Manufacturers. Reduce liability with a conservative period, which also shortens replacement cycles
- Retailers. Benefit from stock that turns over predictably
- Discount channels. Buy stock approaching the end of its useful life at a substantial reduction
- Consumers. Can extend real usable life through storage and handling, within the safety limits
The mechanism is described as an asymmetry of incentives, not as an accusation of any practice.
Dates and discounted stock
Heavily discounted cosmetics are frequently older stock. That is not automatically a problem: an unopened product within its durability, stored properly, is what it says it is. It becomes a problem when the storage history is unknown, when the durability information has been removed, or when the product was never intended for this market.
The point at which this stops being a bargain and starts being a risk is covered in the grey market. The short version: a low price with a visible batch code, an intact period after opening symbol and a UK responsible person is a bargain. A low price with any of those missing is something else.
Storage, which you control
Heat and light are the main enemies, followed by contamination. A bathroom shelf above a shower is the worst common storage location in a British home. A bedroom drawer is considerably better. Products built around oxidation sensitive actives benefit most from cool, dark storage and from packs that limit air.
None of this is exotic and all of it is free. It is also the part of product longevity that is genuinely in your hands, which is more than can be said for most of what this publication covers.
